The newly released Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) “issues a clarion call to investors and companies to lead the transformation of our global food system” Ceres President and CEO Mindy Lubber said in a statement today.
The report, prepared by 103 leading scientists from 52 countries, examines the link between land use and climate change. It illuminates the ways our current land use contributes to climate change — contributing 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions — while demonstrating the havoc climate change is wreaking on water and food systems. The report also outlines the way land use can offer solutions to climate change — solutions that present significant opportunities to investors and companies.
“As the new IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Land makes clear,” Lubber added, “the decisions we make around agriculture land use in the next few years can make or break our global efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Investors and companies have a responsibility, as well as a clear economic incentive, to use their leverage to eliminate deforestation and accelerate the adoption of sustainable agriculture. They have a clear opportunity to safeguard our global food system and stave off the worst impacts of climate change.”
