Barney Schauble is a Senior Advisor at Nephila and the principal of greenthread.
Barney joined Nephila Capital in 2004 in Bermuda as a Managing Partner and moved to San Francisco in 2010 to set up Nephila Advisors. Barney was the founder and Chair of the Board of Nephila Climate (NCx), also Head of Nephila Labs, where his primary responsibilities included oversight of research and insurtech. Nephila was acquired by Markel (MKL) in 2018.
He served as Chair of the Board of Ceres (a non-profit devoted to sustainable capitalism) from 2017 to 2024, and originally joined as Director in 2011. Barney has also served as director or advisor to various companies and funds including The Climate Corporation, MetroMile, Advisen, Tremor, The Production Board, and the Oakland Roots. He is on the operating committee and chair of the sporting committee for Venezia FC.
Barney began working in re/insurance in New York in 1993 as a broker for Marsh and Guy Carpenter. He joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. in their Risks Markets group in 1996, where he helped execute the first catastrophe bond and spent six years working on development and distribution of catastrophe and weather-linked products. Barney joined XL Capital in 2003 and was head of marketing for the weather risk management business.
Barney attended Harvard College and received his BA in Economics in 1995. He wrote his senior thesis to explore investing in bonds linked to property catastrophe reinsurance risk.
