COP16, which runs from October 21 to November 1, will bring together participants from more than 190 countries—including world leaders and global stakeholders from business, indigenous communities, and academia—to discuss progress toward implementing the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (also known as The Biodiversity Plan). The Biodiversity Plan, adopted at COP15 in December 2022, includes 23 action targets for 2030 towards four long-term goals for 2050 to halt and reverse nature and biodiversity loss. One necessary action is to mobilize investments to close the annual biodiversity finance gap of $700 billion.
Taking place in Cali, Colombia, COP16 comes at a critical time for urgent action. Like the climate crisis, nature and biodiversity loss pose financial risks to investment portfolios, business operations and supply chains, and the long-term stability of economies and markets. Ceres experts and partners will highlight the steps investors and companies are taking to help protect and restore nature and ecosystems. Building on Ceres' investor-led work on nature, water, and deforestation, they will explore pathways to accelerate private sector ambition and action in achieving global biodiversity goals.
